“We accept credit cards” is a statement that you’ve got to have come across multiple times at numerous shops, grocery stores and other merchant outlets. Some years back there were just a few shops that would accept visa cards but today you will find that the majority of the shops accept cards. Basically, some shops ( like those belonging to an enormous retail chain ) not only accept cards but also supply cards. These visa cards entitle you for repayments when you use them at any of the stores of that retail chain. With cards around, a ton of folk have stopped carrying any money with them or simply carry a minute amount of cash with them.

With the development of net, card industry too took a new turn and up came ecommerce and e-shops. So, those stickers of “We accept credit cards”, moved on to the doorways of net shops. So came the age where nearly every online-shop would accept cards ( immediately or indirectly ). A few of them disguise themselves as online merchants who accept visa cards as mode of payment ( the particular motive being extraction of critical card details ).

These fraudsters either clone the cards or merely note urgent info from them ( and use that for online-shopping ). The spyware capture their card info and get it broadcast to the spy using net. So a large amount of merchants and service suppliers do accept visa cards but bear in mind the fraudsters too welcome / accept cards.

Are you ready to swipe your credit card for the very first time? Really?

Or are you already on your way to your second credit card? By the way, do you know it takes ages for you to get your credit card processed?

Well, for starters let’s look into the credit card processing stage of your application and why does it take you ages to have that other card.

The first thing that your bank looks into in the stage of credit card processing is the account that you have in other credit card companies. Normally this part of the credit card processing stage-this is where people in banks get down and dirties with their records and other companies’ records. This would also include how long was the credit card processing stage when you applied for your other cards. This usually means that your bank is trying to find out how much your worth really is. This is the part where they categorize you in subgroups. This also usually means that it’s either you’re a good payer or they would have a have time chasing after you state to state.

If this happens in the credit card processing stage, the bank would usually require you to give them an alternate address where they send you the bill, by the way this just means that they want to be sure that you are going to pay! And if you get past this stage of the credit card processing with minor injuries to your ego, the next step will be to find out if you have any unpaid balances or other credit card processing with other banks. This just means that they are trying to find out how cards are able to for and you’ll be able to pay for theirs once you’ve passed the credit card processing stage. They usually do this to counter check if you do have the capacity of paying for a number of credit cards so they won’t get stuck a person that cant. And when you get passed this stage, still with minimal damage to your ego, the next step in the credit card processing stage is to verify your identity as a US citizen.

Because of the US Patriotic Act, everyone trying to get anything in the US is required to have their identities verified because they don’t want terrorist getting anything inside US soil especially getting past credit card processing. And the last part of getting past the credit card processing is to have all the things they need to check in order and to meet the standards of their company, in a nutshell, to get a credit card and to get through credit card processing, you must have other credit cards that are active. Two, you must be a good payer and three you must not have a last name that sounds like you are from Afghanistan-that is. Anyway, you might be having problems when it comes to your credit card processing, most it the time, it’s worth the wait. Credit cards is great financial tool is used correctly and properly. It will enable the credit card holder to manage his or her finances. Having a credit card also ensure not only your money and your life as well because it is very convenient compared to carrying cash or checks every time you have to buy or pay for something.

Are you ready to swipe your credit card for the first time? Really? Or are already en route to the second credit card? And did you know that it takes age to get your credit card processed?

Well, for starters, look at the stage of credit card processing of your application and why it has the age to have another card.

The first thing you see in your bank in the process of credit card processing is the account that you have in other credit card companies. Normally, this part of the stage of processing credit cards is that people in banks and dirt of their records and other documents. This would also include how long was the stage of processing credit card when you ask your other cards. Generally, this means that your bank is trying to understand what your value really is. This is the part where they divided into subgroups. This also means that it is generally either you are a good payer, or a time that would have been chasing each other.

If this occurs at the stage of processing credit cards, the bank generally requires that to give them another address to send you the bill, by the way that they just want to make sure that you are pay! And if you skip this phase of the credit card processing with minor injuries to his ego, the next step is whether you have outstanding balances for credit cards or other treatment with other banks. This does not mean they are trying to understand how the cards are far and was able to pay once they have passed the stage of processing credit cards. Usually, this to counter check if you have the ability to pay for a credit card to avoid getting stuck with someone who can not. And when you skip this step, even with minimal damage to your ego, the next step in the process of credit card processing is to verify your identity as an American citizen.

Because of the U.S. Patriot Act, everyone trying to get anything in the United States is required to verify their identity because they do not want to do anything of terrorism on American soil in particular credit card processing. And the last part of the past, obtaining credit card is to have everything they need to check and comply with the rules of your society, in short, to get a credit card to obtain card processing credit, you must have other credit cards that are active. So you decided to start doing business on the Internet and now you need to get started from scratch to finally be ready to sell your services or products, but where to start and who can help?

I have been many times through this process and every time it is the same questions I ask myself!

Where do I find the hosting that I need for my Website?
What you need to consider is how big your website is and how much traffic you expect to hitting your website, since we assume you are serious about your new business venture, then you should  decide to find a cheap but reliable and stable dedicated hosting plan. I looked into Liquid Web and The Planet, both have starting plans from $69 and a very low setup fee, since The Planet messed completely up my credit card for not so long a time ago, and are very complicated to deal with if you are outside of the US, then I would recommend Liquid Web.

Now you have your hosting in place and can start uploading your website! Uups, you need to figure out how your website should look and if it would be of benefit for you to use a CMS or Shopping Cart.

    Shopping Cart or CMS?
    So I while I started my business I have been looking at several solutions both in regards to a CMS solution and a regular Shopping Cart solution. It will depend very much on what your business is, I will give you 2 great suggestions here;

If you are going to sell electronic downloads, e-books, products (of any kind) or something else that need to be downloaded or shipped after Payment, then you should look into a shopping cart like OSCommerce which is free at widely supported by millions of people, a much smaller solution and which costs $25 is Pphpldshop.com, it is very easy to install and easy to customize, the support is, sorry to say so, a bit slow, but it works great.

An example of the PHPLD shopping cart can be found here: shop.cclogic.com

If you are going to offer services which don’t can be downloaded immediately or accessed after payment I would defiantly go for a CMS solution, a good CMS software will have a lot of extensions to advanced your needs and is easy to customize and maintain. It is crustily of importance for you to install a CMS which is supported instantly with security updates and buck fixes and where new versions are released on a regular basis. My best suggestion for you is to use :   Joomla is also supported by millions of people and you get everything you need, in fact with Joomla you are able to extend your website to a large corporate professional website with less effort and for a few bucks.

    The Design and Logo
Now you need a good designer, please avoid for any price services which will charge you several thousand dollars, if you just need to get started, I made a very bad experience with a company OGOsense.com they are crocks and took $ 1.800 from me, what they did is looking professional, they will send you massive of e-mails with questionnaires and a lot of other crap you don’t want to look professional. My result was that they then took a cheap template from: Joomla Templates and put it online. Stay away.

No find a good template that fits into what you have in mind you can find many great templates and later on get them customized for less than $100.

For logo design I highly recommend the service of Business Logo, they are fast and very reliable to deal with, the results of their works is professional, the website is here:  BusinessLogo.net

    Accepting Credit Card Payments
Now you are almost done and ready to start selling your services and products on the Internet.
To be able to accept payments on your website I would recommend you to take a look at the marked, and to find a reliable payment processor which is difficult and where you ran the risk to get into a trap. During my more than 9 Years of Experience in the Internet Business, I have seen a lot.

For startup business you should look into 2co.com, paypal.com, alertpay.com and even moneybookers.com, they are all 4 companies which have been in the payment processing business for many years now and they have grown to huge multimillion companies which don’t disappear overnight.

Once you have grown your own business to be a small or even medium sized company with a monthly sales volume of let’s say approximately $15.000 you should look into becoming your own Merchant Account and connect your website directly with a payment gateway, a good start would be cclogic.com they are only working as consultancies, but have been in the business like the first mentioned 4 companies for many years.

They will provide you with the reliable and trusted solution you want.  With the large network of Banks and Payment processors they have, you will be in good hands.

Beside to accept credit cards you should also look into other payment methods, you have optional possibilities to Accept ACH Check processing, Debit Card processing like Visa Electron or Maestro, Bank Transfer payments, Phone Billing and much more… Ask your payment service provider for what other payments methods they offer.

Most important for you is, the payment gateway provider MUST be PCI compliant, here is the official website for the same: https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/ and at least Level 1, this is not something you need to worry about what it is about, just make sure your Payment Gateway provider is compliant. This is a second level of security for you and your business. If anyone tells you they are in process, or they use HackerSafe.com, RUN RUN RUN and stay away, it is not what we speak about. We want a fully compliant PCI Level 1 payment gateway, and we want to see a VALID certificate.

Now you are ready to get started, please make a short comment on this blog post if you find it informative or if you need  more tips and tricks.

Please also feel free to Visit our Webmaster Forum which includes many of the topics mentioned in this article and where you can discuss what YOU want.

Most merchant accounts have a cancellation fee, mainly these are fixed amounts. The costs of setting up and operating a merchant account for a business can be expensive; this fee helps recover some of the losses if a merchant cancels, particularly in the beginning. Providers will offer to reduce or discard this fee should you have unresolved problems or issues; check with them as to their specific policy.

Take notice of how the company treats you. If they are quick and informative in answering your questions then this will probably be how they go about their business; if they don’t reply quickly or answer the questions then try another service, there are plenty out there.

Before you decide on the merchant account suited to your business, understanding a little about merchant accounts should be high on your priority list as monthly fees can differ immensely. The more you know and understand your merchant account, the better you will control your business. There are many factors to consider when looking at merchant accounts, amongst them the ease with which the account is set up, how simple it is to operate and the reputation and professional attitude of the merchant account provider. Never underestimate the importance of an anti-fraud system as chargeback penalties from fraudulent transactions can be high and will cut into your business profits if not controlled. Check out the internet for information on merchant accounts and anti-fraud systems.

The most important feature are fraud prevention tools. Merchants continually neglect this part of their business; fraudulent transactions result in loss of revenue, something no merchant wants or needs. Merchants will be aware of chargebacks and the penalties these can incur; credit card fraud is prevalent, increasing daily as hackers come up with advanced methods to obtain card information. Utilising anti-fraud tools will mean less time inspecting suspect transactions and more time generating sales. Basic anti-fraud tools include an Address Verification System (AVS) that checks the customers’ delivery address against the address the card issuing bank has on file, and CVV2, the 3 digit security number printed on the back of credit cards VISA, MasterCard and Discover Card.

Another addition to expect is a recurring billing system, particularly suitable for subscription and membership based businesses. Many merchants have customers that order products on a regular basis, if billing has to be done each month to the same customer using the same details it can waste valuable time and energy. With recurring billing you just supply the gateway with the customers billing information and how regularly to invoice them (this only needs doing once) and the gateway conducts all future transactions.

Some customers will actually prefer to call rather than send an email and wait for a reply, especially if it is a quick query or regarding a refund. Once the query has been dealt with and the customer now wants to make a purchase it would be inconvenient for them to return to the website, they might decide not to bother and so you lose the sale. A virtual terminal means the merchant can take a sale over the phone by processing the customer’s credit card payment manually. Virtual terminals are also used to issue returns and cancel unwanted transactions.

Credit cards have become the most common and convenient way to pay online but there are still people who don’t own one; you don’t want to turn these people away and lose a sale. Whereas written cheques used to be the norm, there are now electronic checks (eChecks) available. No need to write out a cheque, post it, wait for it to arrive and clear, customers can merely enter their bank details by electronic means.

The main headache for online merchants is security. Along with your business information, your customers’ personal information moves through your gateway every day. This information is invaluable to hackers; when choosing a gateway ensure you select one that uses the highest security techniques to keep information safe. These should include security schemes operated by the main credit card providers, such as the Visa Cardholder Information Security Program, MasterCard Site Data Protection, and Discover Information Security and Compliance. If your gateway provider doesn’t comply with these you could end up paying higher fees or your account closed down. Check out the Internet for a quality payment gateway provider that offers a high level of anti-fraud tools to protect you and your customers.

Many merchants believe that banks and credit card organisations don’t devote enough energy on searching for thieves in order to reduce the number of fraudulent transactions, as costs associated with an investigation can work out greater than abandoning the search. In particular, small fraud transactions are unlikely to be scrutinized too closely as the cost of research and prosecution will generally exceed the loss caused by the fraud. Thieves that perpetrate credit card crime are either never found or go without punishment and so are free to carry on persecuting customers and merchants. Generally, there is little merchants can do once a fraud has occurred and they have to accept they will lose some of their profit to the effects of fraud at present if they want to have their business online.

Associations of merchants have tried to bring into practice various anti-fraud measures, such as single use card numbers, however they are not popular with customers as it involves a new number each time, so is quite impossible for customers to memorise card numbers. People require credit cards with no aggravation and because of laws that limit customer liability in the event of fraud there is little motivation to engage in extra security. Merchants can execute these extra security measures but take the risk of losing business if the customer chooses not to use them.

If you are an online merchant and think that a customer might be using a stolen credit card, get in touch with the appropriate card provider (Visa, Amex, MC or Discover) to find the issuing bank’s phone number, then phone the bank to report that you believe their customer’s credit card information has been stolen.

Online security cannot be fully guaranteed, but then what can? If you employ a system that provides anti-fraud tools they can only help you in cutting down the number of fraudulent transactions in your online business. As your business experience grows, you will start to recognise suspicious transactions and can check them out before proceeding. As an online business you will have little time to investigate every transaction you are doubtful of, so have a look online where there are now lots of companies to be found that offer ant-fraud tools to minimize credit card fraud risks to merchants.

The decision to accept credit card payments and so increase revenue to your online business brings with it the difficulty in choosing a payment gateway to process sales.

In very simple terms, the gateway processes online payments by connecting your websites order form with the merchant account and returning the answer to the merchant and customer, either approved or declined. Although the gateway itself actually only connects the website to the merchant account, larger payment gateway providers offer additional services, such as merchant accounts and shopping carts.

All payment gateways have standard fees to be aware of. The first of these are setup fees, charged when the gateway is initially established and often non-returnable. There will also be monthly fees to pay for the service and charges for every transaction processed, regardless of whether the transaction has been accepted or denied. Nowadays, when searching the internet we want everything to be processed quickly and get annoyed if this isn’t the case.

If transactions are slow when purchasing or during check out, the customer is likely to leave your website and find another that can process the sale much quicker. You need a reliable gateway provider who can promise a quick efficient service. Gateways offer a range of features that will increase security and revenue. Listed below are several of the more common features to expect.

The majority of fraud committed online is through using stolen credit card information; various methods are employed to obtain this, such as copying information from retailers, stealing it from company databases and even buying credit card information from company employees. We are constantly being told by the credit card industry that online purchases are safe, but, as with any transaction there are always risks involved.

Fraudulent transactions cause losses for credit card organisations as only a small percentage is actually recoverable, either by locating the thieves or recouping a portion from merchants. In the Visa and MasterCard rules, a merchant’s processing bank is fully accountable for every transaction processed.

If the merchant conducts business illegally or recklessly and causes lots of chargebacks, the provider can be left with huge losses. To prevent this, the provider passes some of the costs on to the merchant if they haven’t carried out sufficient security checks and completed all the card details correctly, these are the chargebacks. The merchant then has to cover the total cost of the transaction, transaction fees and is forced to pay chargeback penalty.

Because of these chargebacks, online merchants are recognising the need to take some responsibility in installing precautions to protect their online stores from credit card fraud. Anti-fraud systems are being acquired by merchants using highly secure anti-fraud tools and merchants are commonly signing up for services offered by the main credit card organisations, Visa and MasterCard SecureCode aim to dispel some of the apprehension customers feel when buying products online. These services involve customers registering a password with their card issuer and every time they use the card online they are asked for their personal password.

While much has been said about PayPal, then I believe there are still some topics which need to be outlined in regards to all the many Online Merchants and PayPal users.

I see many forums which are filled with posts about PayPal and with questions I believe are already answered. However below I will go through of some of the questions which I see most and try to explain it so that also the last user on the Internet can understand it.

One of the most common questions in regards to PayPal and to Accept Credit Card Payments is; Can I use my PayPal account to accept credit card payments? The answer to this is YES you can, in fact PayPal lives from people using their credit card to pay for gods and services available at hundreds of thousands of websites.  PayPal only differs from other Merchant Account solutions by converting the money you pay to another PayPal user with your credit card, to PayPal money. Once the money is in any PayPal user’s account, it will and can be moved around and of coursed be used to pay other PayPal users.

The great benefit of having PayPal is that if you live in a country where you are unable to become a Credit Card or a Visa Electron card, then you can pay with PayPal, which is accepted in almost any webstore you can find. Other reason could be that you are unable to become a credit card due to your credit rating, than a PayPal account is the solution for you. Did you know that we still in 2009 have countries where it isn’t normal to have a bank account and where you get your salary in cash? That true, of the countries are Uruguay which have a great banking infrastructure but still most people there are unable to become a bank account!

So back to topic, now you know that each and every credit card holder can pay you if you accept PayPal on your website.

But hey, when one of my customers click on the PayPal button it directs him to login to his PayPal account, how the hell is he able to pay without to open a PayPal account or use his existing account. That’s obviously a sign that you still not get it!

Every time a user is forwarded to PayPal to make a payment for any reason, then there is an option to pay directly with a credit card, PayPal even not hide this, they pull up a site where they tell you that you are now able to pay with your credit card without having a PayPal account!

Now you will ask yourself, why do not all just accept PayPal as payment method? If it is that easy and if you don’t need to go through all the hassle with PayPal as what you need when you obtain your own merchant account then what is the point?

This question has also been addressed many times in all the forums I visited over the years. Sure it is much easier to just go and open a PayPal account and start selling your gods or services, but PayPal don’t accept all countries, or all types of business. Also there is the aspect of looking professional against your customers, if make an example scenario as the following then you will see that it often is a great benefit to Accept credit Card Payments by both to have a PayPal account and your own Merchant Account.

Scenario: A Online Merchant has been trading his products which are boxes for almost 3 years now and he has a stable monthly turnover of about $ 50.000 so far he started with a 3rd party processor like 2CO (which is one of the most common processors to use and which is an good alternative to PayPal).

If we analyze above scenario, then the first impression is, great he is doing well and why worry about to offer more options to pay, it looks like everything works. That’s a fatal error to think in this way and it is wrong. As a expanding business you need to offer more services towards your customers and you need to let them feel comfortable with shopping at your business, also you need to increase your income.

If this business would go and become his own Merchant Account and connect his website with a Payment gateway, then the upfront costs would be (only an example) let’s say $ 800 and maybe he also agree to pay a monthly fee of let’s say $25, those fees will make it up with the costs of transaction processing he safe, since 2Co.com often charge about 5% and more plus a transaction fee, and with your own Merchant Account you might only pay about 3% or even less and a transaction fee of maybe $ .20. Now I hope you can see the point, this merchant will increase his income over the next month and get more capital to extend his business.

Next thing is, as I mentioned in the beginning of this article, there are that many people out there which don’t have a credit card or are unable to become a credit card this people often only have one choice left, and that’s to open a PayPal account, if they have something to sell, then they can load the PayPal account in that way, if they have a regular bank account they can use it to load the PayPal account. So this people might also be interested in the products sold by our Merchant, and if he offers the possibility for people and potential customers to pay with PayPal, then he will increase his income and sales with less effort.

Now you must think, okay, if PayPal can accept credit cards directly and if there are that many people out there which don’t have other options than PayPal, then it must be enough to just offer PayPal as Payment method?!  Wrong again, I know it is a bit difficult; however I will also go through this now.

A Merchant Account isn’t more than just an contract which you have with a bank to be allowed to send your credit card transactions and in some cases other payment methods to them. But to be able to do so, you need a payment gateway, often this payment gateways gives you a bunch of great information about each payment transaction, which you can use for marketing purpose. Another thing is, that the most Payment Gateways give you Real Time Transaction overviews and calculate the overall chargeback ratio and a lot of other things. Finally you are able to integrate your website directly with this payment gateway which do that your customer (the credit card holder) don’t need to leave your website, and which again let you look more professional towards the customer.

My conclusion is, that to offer both PayPal and alternative Payment methods is the way to go. For Startup business where you can put in question if they will succeed it is better to start with PayPal until you have built up a stable monthly sales volume. This will save the new business upfront costs and the integration of a payment gateway, which often needs some programming experience or at least a good coded plug-in.

If you are looking to Accept Credit Card Payments or need a Payment Gateway, please visit cclogic.com we can help, also for High Risk- and High volumen business.
